Communication is key to all forms of success, particularly financial success! Recently I met with a husband & wife, in their home, thinking we were all on the same page…that we were having a conversation about how they could move forward over the next few years. Instead I walked into a hostile environment, with a very angry and defensive wife because she felt threatened! She let me know the husband had organised the appointment…and had not bothered to tell the wife! My goodness that was uncomfortable…
The thing is she was angry…but she was also open to change. Changes in the future, at a pace that suits her, just not changes that were being forced on her now!
After the dust settled on her anger she realised I wasn’t there to change their lives right there and then. With a little coaxing we were able to discover that while they hadn’t spoken about their goals and dreams, they had very similar ideas, just with slightly different timing goals…but they hadn’t talked about it!
As they were kicking around ideas I was seeking opinions, and discovering their long term goals and dreams. Listening to them talk helped me discover things that were important, things that were non-negotiables to them, even how much longer they wanted to work. It turns out she wants to keep working for at least the next five years, he doesn’t. No numbers were spoken; we were discovering the important things they wanted and begin to formulate their dreams for the future.
Today’s tip…if you’re planning a joint future, whether emotionally or financially, some of the biggest keys to success are…communication and listening!
